INSECTS

The insect fauna of Thāsos is typically diverse and probably consists of between 5 and 10,000 species. Few groups have been studied in any detail but reference to the Bibliography will give an indication of the available information. Identification of many groups is notoriously difficult because of the proximity of Thāsos to Turkey and the resultant biogeographical mix of Mediterranean, Balkan and Asian species. The island was well studied by the Bulgarians during their Second World War occupation but since then information has generally been sparse. However, things are definitely improving and there is a steady stream of new literature being published that allows for the identification of the Greek fauna. On these pages I have added details for those insect groups that have been reasonably well studied. Pages will be added for other insect groups when information becomes available or as time allows.
